Mentoring in the Machine Age
Share
Hi Friends,
Let’s talk about something that matters now more than ever - mentoring in the machine age.
The world of work is shifting under our feet. AI is automating tasks, algorithms are driving decisions, and chatbots are answering questions that used to require human expertise. The pace is fast, the pressure is real, and the rules? Well, they’re still being written.
In the midst of this disruption, one thing remains timeless: the power of mentoring.
But here’s the truth most aren’t talking about ... mentoring itself must evolve.
Welcome to the Machine Age
We’re no longer preparing people for predictable careers. We’re mentoring future leaders who will work with machines, through uncertainty, and across global, digital-first teams. That means traditional mentoring models, ones built on top-down knowledge sharing and long lead times, are quickly becoming outdated.
Instead, the best mentoring today is:
- Real-time
- Adaptive
- Human-centred
- Strategically bold
We’re mentoring people not just to do better work, but to be more human in how they lead, decide, and adapt.
What Mentoring Looks Like in 2025 (and Beyond)
Here’s how I see it:
1. Mentors are Sensemakers
AI can give you data. A mentor helps you turn it into insight. I call this empathetic decoding or the ability to ask, “What does this actually mean for you and your goals?”
2. Mentors Model Agility
In a world of rapid tech shifts, mentors are no longer just “been there, done that.” They’re still evolving, still learning, still retooling. That matters. A lot.
3. Mentors Activate Confidence
While AI amplifies productivity, it also amplifies imposter syndrome. We need mentors who remind us that our value lies in what can’t be automated - judgment, creativity, empathy, and courage.
How I Mentor in the Machine Age
As a CEO and Global Mentor, my role isn’t to hand over a blueprint. It’s to help leaders:
- See the blind spots automation misses
- Navigate change with clarity and confidence
- Build careers and businesses that are future-proof and heart-led
And honestly? It’s the most energising, purpose-fuelled work I do.
Because the machine age doesn’t need more noise. It needs wise, grounded, future-ready leaders who know how to blend tech with truth.
A New Definition of Mentorship
Let’s redefine mentorship not as a transfer of knowledge, but as a co-creation of bold, human-centred leadership in a digital age.
That means:
- Asking better questions, not just giving better answers
- Helping mentees become thinkers, not just doers
- Prioritising mental resilience as much as technical literacy
And above all, it means showing up as real, raw, and ready to lead differently.
💬 Over to You
Are you mentoring or being mentored right now? How has the digital world changed your expectations of what mentorship should be?
Let’s talk about it - because mentoring in the machine age isn’t optional. It’s essential.
